CHILDREN
Margaret died on the 6th November 1900 at the North Dublin Union Workhouse. She was aged 40 and the cause of death was 'Uterine Cancer' On the Census of 1901 Francis is a Widower with 6 children aged between 2 and 15. He can not write, he says he is aged 43 ( he is actually 45) and his occupation is General Labourer. The family were living at 25 Jane Place Lower. This was a two room Cottage which the census records they shared with a family named Russell. There ware 9 people in the Russell family. So 16 people in all were living in the 2 room cottage
The 1908 Electoral Register shows that he had a vote at 25 Jane Place Lower where he was the "Inhabitant or ratepayer" there of a "House and Yard" His brother in law Francis Byrne (married to sister Margaret) has a vote at No 25 and his cousin Thomas McGrane (son of his uncle Francis and Aunt Catherine Connor) has a vote at No. 28

On the 3rd June Francis McGrane married his second wife. She was named Mary Fay. She was originally from Co Louth but her family had relocated to the East Wall area. Her Parents were James Fay and Mary Anne Tiernan. Both had died young and the various Fay children were living with relatives in Dublin and Louth. Having been born in 1886, Mary was 20 years younger than Francis when they married.

The 1911 Census finds the family now at 14 Jane Place Lower. Again they are sharing the cottage with another family - this time the Mullens (7 members) Francis and Mary have had 4 children of their own. Myles, James and Michael alive plus John who died as an infant.
His occupation is "Sawyer' this means a wood cutter and it is significant that he has moved from the occasional piecemeal work of the Dublin 'Labourer' to a skilled job. He says he can now read and write, where as in 1901 he could read but not write. (or in his own words he can he says he can "read right" which is good enough !
He is 45 years old (only aging 2 years since 1901 !!) This is a little odd as everyone filling in the 1911 census form knew it would be consulted when they came to apply for the newly introduced Old Age Pension so it was very normal to add 10 years rather than remove them.

Francis Joseph McGrane died February 18th 1931. His obituary was placed in The Evening Herald. It records his residence as being 6 Upper Oriel Street, and a member of The Amalgamated Society of Wood Cutting Machinists. He is buried in the old churchyard of St Nicholas of Myra in Kinsealy, Co Dublin. The only connection I can find between the family and Kinsealy is that his sister Alicia married a man named James Vickers who were occasional farm labourers in both Lucan and Kinsealy. Alicia Vickers was buried in the same churchyard in 1924 - and while there is no memorial to Francis, Alicia Vicker's name is recorded on a rapidly decaying steel and concrete cross there.

His first wife Margaret Doyle may also be buried there - but the burial records have since been lost by Fingal County Council. His second wife Mary Fay died December 8 1958 and she is buried in Sutton with her son James and step daughter Mary Anne Caulfield.

Mary Fay/McGrane continued living here along with her step daughter's family (Mary Anne Caulfield) and grandson (Frank Heeney) until her death in 1958.
