Thomas McGrane
Born on 30th November 1898, Thomas was the youngest child of Francis McGrane and his first Wife Margaret Byrne. Margaret died just one year after Thomas was born.
He joined the Merchant Navy, probably in Liverpool and the photo to the left is the photo on his CR10 (joining up) card from the Southampton City Archives. He seems to have only completed 2 voyages with the Merchant Navy and then arrived in New York in 1922 and decided he was staying.
He applied for Naturalisation as a US citizen and was granted it in 1926.
There are shipping records of him traveling all over the world, America, Ireland, Scotland Brazil, Australia, Dominican Republic to name a few, as an Able Bodied Seaman up to 1945
However he does not appear in any of the US census up to the latest in 1940.
I can find no marriage or death record for him in NYC either.

A CHARGE OF HOUSEBREAKING
James Barrett 24 Lower Jane Place: Patrick and Myles Vickers, 24 Lower Oriel Street" William Macken 11 Canning Plave and Thomas MCGrane 24 Lower Jane Place, were charged by Constable M'Given (163 C ?) with having, on the night of the 31st December broken into the licensed premises of Mr Patrick Doyle, Lower Oriel Street and stealing a quantity of whiskey, tea, sugar, Bovril, Biscuits etc. worth 13 11/6. They were defended by Mr James Brady. The only witness for the Crown was Myles Vickers who it was said had voluntarily made a statement incriminating the others. Vickers now denied the accuracy of the alleged statement. The Magistrate said that no man would convict the defendants and he discharged them.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
* Myles and Patrick Vickers were Thomas McGrane's cousins, the sons of Alicia Vickers nee McGrane. The sister of Thomas's father Francis.
* We have mat Mr McInerney QC of the Northern Division of the Dublin Police Court before. He was the one that Thomas's brother Francis would be brought before in a year from now to answer charges of 'Absenting himself from HM Army' Also noting that they were both defended by 'Mr Brady'
Recently I received Thomas McGrane's Immigration file from the US Citizenship and Immigration Services.
It ranges from his 'Declaration of Intention' form dated 11th March 1923 to his application for a second replacement copy of his Certificate for Naturalisation which was issued 5th May 1943 giving his last known address as 228 Sixth Street, Port Arthur, Texas. (copy below) This certificate was never picked up by Thomas and in 1949 the original was returned to the State Department for destruction.

This is the photo of Thomas from his file at Sailor Snug Harbor, Staten Island where he died 2nd Jan 1964. The 'paralytic stroke' he suffered on 22nd April 1946 when he was 48 years old (six months after completing his last voyage for the Merchant Marine from Gibraltar to New York on board the SS Royal S Copland) is visible on the left hand side of his face. He was reliant on welfare and 'friends' until in 1955 he made an application to Sailor Snug Harbor for residence.
Below are his original application to Sailor Snug Harbour and then their record of his death in 1964. |
