The 1939/40 Electoral Roll records Paddy and his wife Christine living at the old Curry family home of 13 Nixon Street. North Dock, Dublin 1. Paddy had been 'adopted' by George and Sarah Brophy/Curry in 1912, shortly after his birth, and married Christina in 1937.
He joined up with the 2nd Battalion, East Surrey Regiment and found himself in Singapore on the 15th February 1942 when the Japanese Army conquered the city and all Allied Soldiers were taken prisoner. As a POW Paddy was sent to Changi Jail whee he spent 15 months. One of his fellow POW's at Changi was the English cartoonist Ronald Serle who went on to create the St Trinian's comic strip. Ronald drew this drawing for Paddy.
